Hear From Atlanta

UFE Patients

Atlanta Fibroid Center helps women in Atlanta and beyond live healthier and happier with the help of UFE. Here’s what they have to say.

Your Journey

at our Atlanta UFE treatment centers

We strive to make the journey to a fibroid-free future easy, convenient and comfortable for every patient. Most people’s experiences look something like this:

STEP 1: Consultation

Meet with an interventional radiologist physician in the privacy of one of our offices or via Telehealth. We’ll discuss your medical history, your fibroid treatment goals and available options such as UFE. We’ll also cover insurance and financial details before recommending next steps.

STEP 2: MRI Imaging

MRIs are painless outpatient tests that create high-resolution 3D images of your uterus and surrounding area. They provide clear pictures of fibroids from multiple angles, helping us get a good idea of the size, number and location. We’ll work with you to schedule an MRI at a convenient time.

STEP 3: Candidacy Review

After your consultation and MRI, we’ll review your case to determine if you qualify for UFE. Most patients who have been told they qualify for other fibroid treatments are usually candidates for UFE. Rarely, a fibroid may not be suitable for UFE, which is why we recommend an MRI beforehand.

STEP 4: Procedure Day

Your UFE will be performed in the fully equipped, private X-ray room of our outpatient facility. Light sedation and local anesthetics will help you stay comfortable. The procedure usually takes less than an hour. You’ll then be able to rest for several hours before you can get up, eat and go home.

STEP 5: Recovery

UFE recovery time is about a week, and women only need a Band-Aid® to cover the nick from the procedure. Throughout your recovery, your healthcare team will be there to support you with any assistance or questions. After you’ve recovered, we’ll likely order a follow-up MRI to ensure everything looks good and confirm that fibroids are disappearing.

Frequently

Asked Questions

What is uterine fibroid embolization (UFE)?

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a non-surgical, image-guided procedure that treats fibroids by cutting off their blood supply, causing them to shrink over time. At Atlanta Fibroid Center, UFE is performed by board-certified interventional radiologists Dr. John Lipman and Dr. Sima Banerjee using only local anesthesia, with most patients home the same day.

Where can I get UFE treatment in Atlanta?

Atlanta Fibroid Center has two convenient outpatient offices serving greater Atlanta: our Smyrna office at 3670 Highlands Parkway SE, and our Lawrenceville office at 748 Old Norcross Rd #150. Both offer private, outpatient UFE procedures close to home.

Am I a candidate for UFE?

Most women who have been told they qualify for other fibroid treatments, including hysterectomy, are also candidates for UFE. Candidacy is confirmed with a consultation and MRI, which show the size, number and location of your fibroids. In rare cases, a fibroid’s location may make it unsuitable for UFE.

Does insurance cover fibroid embolization in Georgia?

Most major insurance plans in Georgia cover uterine fibroid embolization when it is deemed medically necessary. Our Atlanta care coordinators verify your specific coverage and out-of-pocket costs before you schedule a procedure.

What is recovery like after UFE?

Most UFE patients go home the same day as their procedure and return to normal activities within a week, with only a Band-Aid covering the small nick used for the procedure. A follow-up MRI is typically ordered after recovery to confirm the fibroids are shrinking.

Who are the fibroid specialists at Atlanta Fibroid Center?

Atlanta Fibroid Center is led by Dr. John Lipman, MD, FSIR, a board-certified interventional radiologist and Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology with 30 years of experience and a global reputation as a pioneer of UFE, and Dr. Sima Banerjee, MD, a board-certified interventional radiologist with 15 years of experience treating fibroids.
